Trash For Gas
This Innovative Energy Transition/Environmental Protection Initiative campaign is the brainchild of Smart Gas. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), nearly 133m Nigerians are multidimensionally poor. The Nigeria Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) shows that poor people experience over one quarter of all possible deprivations. 65% (86.1m) of multidimensionally poor people live in the north, while 35% (nearly 47m) live in the south. A significant portion of this poor population are deprived of clean cooking fuel, adequate sanitation and access to healthcare.
As an ESG-focused company, our operations align with SDG 7 and 13 respectively, which focuses on access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all and the urgent need to combat climate change and its impacts. Our research revealed that the initial cost of the cylinder is the major barrier to transition amongst the underserved, as they are unable to accumulate that lump sum. However, they can afford to refill as little as 1kg from their daily commercial activities if they have the cylinders. This was why in collaboration with our sponsors, we decided to pioneer the penetration of cooking gas at the grassroot level across the nation by donating free prefilled gas cylinders within these communities. This reduces their over-dependence on the unsafe use of charcoal, kerosene, and firewood.
Through innovative collaborations, we conduct these giveaways largely through our trash for gas campaign or our palliative events. Our Trash For Gas campaign allows us tackle two environmental challenges at once because recipients are required to exchange a stipulated amount of trash for pre-filled 3kg or 6kg cylinder units. Through our palliative events, recipients are not required to pick up trash, rather, gas cylinders are donated to them as a way of alleviating the economic hardships.
We partner with the 3 tiers of government, corporate organizations, religious institutions, NGOs and individuals with a passion to promote sustainable practices amongst this target audience.
Beyond distribution of prefilled cooking gas cylinders, this is an advocacy. We educate our recipients on the safe use of cooking gas, importance of maintaining a clean environment and the disadvantages of using traditional means of cooking. As a partner, you are not only a sustainability champion, you are a change agent because of your contributions to making clean cooking accessible to the N133m Nigerians that are multidimensionally poor, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
Through collaborations, we achieve greater strides. Let’s come together to ease the transition to cooking gas one cylinder at a time. The impact is undeniable, and the feedback is heartwarming.
Join us in this noble cause today!
Our environment knows no tribe, religion or gender. Our environment unites us as a people, let’s care for it.
